Capillary-wave roughening of surface-induced layering in liquid gallium.

چکیده
The temperature dependence of surface-induced atomic layering in liquid gallium has been investigated with x-ray reflectivity. The prominent layering peak at qz52.4 Å 21 decreases dramatically upon heating from 22 to 170 °C, but its width stays, unexpectedly, unchanged. The decrease is traced to the temperature dependence of capillary-wave induced surface roughness. The constant width indicates a temperature-independent layering decay length. The measured layering amplitudes are found to be significantly underestimated by existing theory and molecular simulations. @S0163-1829~96!02337-5#

Surface structure of liquid metals and the effect of capillary waves: X-ray studies on liquid indium
We report x-ray reflectivity ~XR! and small-angle off-specular diffuse-scattering ~DS! measurements from the surface of liquid indium close to its melting point of 156 °C. From the XR measurements we extract the surface structure factor convolved with fluctuations in the height of the liquid surface. We present a model to describe DS that takes into account the surface structure factor, thermal...
متن کاملX-ray studies of atomic layering at liquid metal surfaces
Surface-induced layering has been observed in liquid gallium and mercury using X-ray reflectivity. The specular reflectivity R(q,) has been measured to wavevector transfers as large as q, = 3.0 A-‘. For Ga, the only major deviations from pesnel theory R, are near q, = 2.4 A-‘, where there is a peak in the ratio R/R,. For Hg, there is a broad peak near 2.15 A-‘. The data have been collected on a...
متن کاملX-ray reflectivity measurements of surface layering in liquid mercury.
The surface normal structure of the mercury liquid-vapor interface has been investigated by measuring the x-ray reflectivity out to a momentum transfer of qz 2.5 Å . The results provide direct experimental proof of surface layering in liquid metals. The layer spacing is given by the atomic dimensions of the Hg atoms. The minimum layer width agrees well with the predictions of capillary wave t...
متن کاملMicroscopic surface structure of liquid alkali metals
We report an x-ray scattering study of the microscopic structure of the surface of a liquid alkali metal. The bulk liquid structure factor of the eutectic K67Na33 alloy is characteristic of an ideal mixture, and so shares the properties of an elemental liquid alkali metal. Analysis of off-specular diffuse scattering and specular x-ray reflectivity shows that the surface roughness of the K-Na al...
متن کاملSurface layering in liquid gallium: An X-ray reflectivity study.
Surface-induced atomic layering in liquid gallium has been observed using x-ray reflectivity, ultrahigh vacuum conditions, and sputtered clean surfaces. Reflectivity data, collected on a supercooled liquid sample to momentum transfers as large as qz 3.0 Å21, exhibit a strong maximum near 2.4 Å21 indicating a layer spacing that is comparable to its atomic dimensions. The amplitude of the elect...
